I find myself in the midst of what could be a pretty ugly situation at church. — Yes, i know. I’ve only been helping for three weeks and i’m already stirring up trouble. — “People may feel hurt or threatened” is not what you want to hear less than a month into volunteering. But that is where I found myself over the past couple of weeks.

Often things are misconstrued and miscommunicated by leadership (staff, volunteer and / or natural) with no ill-intentions at all. In fact, in this situation, I really feel everyone wants to be on the same page and everyone has a desire to see this handled in a Christ-like manner.

Unfortunately I’ve become the focal point of this particular conflict. Yesterday I found out that a handful of students — most of which I have barely met or spoken to, but are directly involved in the situation — were indirectly given information that lead to understandable but false misconceptions of what my role in the ministry will be for this group. I’m a little miffed and perplexed at how and why they obtained this information, and if their misconconceptions were actually reality, I would expect them to be hurt, threatened, and upset at the looming situation.

Thankfully, though, the leader entrusted with the heavy responsibility of leading this group acted more maturely than I’ve seen Sr. Pastors deal with similar conflict. When cornered about the situation, she shed a positive light on the situation, set it straight in their hearts and minds what this whole thing is really all about, and really set the stage for me to be able to build relationships with these students.

Okay, so i’m being about as vague as you can get. But the whole point is that this “conflict” has actually been extremely refreshing. I’m very much looking forward to working side by side with someone who is able to handle conflict and transition so maturely.

Seriously. It’s very cool. Kudos.
