Practices are improving. We still have to fix the two hardest things to fix in a youth band… Volume and Dynamics. I’m working on dynamics (for some reason, i couldn’t remember that word for the life of me last night)… Volume will come in time. Line up:
Intro: Blues Jam in A (after all, thats all we ever do for an intro)… actually i was screwing around with a jam in C Dorian the other day… maybe i’ll teach them that.
Worship Set:
My Glorious
Blessed Be You Name
Grace Like Rain
Reflective: Take You Back (Jeremy camp)
There are still some ADD issues, which i completely understand. Musicians (of which i like to consider myself) tend to have Musical ADD. During down times we want to screw around, try new things, anything but listen to what is going on way over on the other side of the stage. This is another area that is extremely hard to overcome; its probably what i miss the most from my old team (props: Sean, Justin, Dionna, Stephen, Shauna). Those guys knew how to mix business and fun. A 2 hour practice yielded 4-5 songs easy, plus a complete set run-through.
Saying all that, this team’s response to our excellence talk last week was great; everyone actually showed up on time and we were rolling before the clock struck 8. And amazingly enough we got through 4 songs. Much improved from the normal three we get through. They’re talented enough to figure out the business/fun/excellence balance without me being too much of a jerk.
Now I just need to build myself a gear dolly so i don’t have to carry 75 lbs around all the time and make two trips to the car to get everything.
also as musicians the golden rule should apply, “if you can’t hear what others are doing, you’re probably playing too loud” . By the way, You’re doing a great job! It’s great having a partner…
Our challenge is that we have a bunch of boys who only care about being rock stars. It’s frustrating when they help lead worship, and then go home and sing about his girlfriend cheating on him so he’s going to pull out a gun on her & the other guy…..& so we pray.
i don’t think we’re talking about the same group?
