X:Worship (2.0)
My plan was to video this. I took my camera to do so. I filmed an intro to it before I left. But i forgot to video the actual meat of it all.
Anyway…
Continuing my quick-hit teaching style every couple of weeks at Worship Practice. The first week I talked about Excellence, this past week I talked about defining our audience. Defining our audience will in return define our roles and give us a focus and vision for each worship service. Here’s the quick break down:
Audience 1 –> God, Christ, the Object of our worship. The sole reason we worship and lead worship. This defines our role first and foremost as worshippers. Our worship must be in spirit and in truth. Not vain and empty. This is by far the most important audience, but it’s also what we will focus on the majority of the time in the future so I will not expand any further now.
Audience 2 –> Peers who are followers of Christ. This defines our roles in two ways. First, we must show other followers that it is okay to express our emotions and love for Christ in an outward, worshipful manner. This is where the term “Worship Leader” really comes from, with this audience in mind. We are to lead followers into worship. Since we are dealing specifically with youth, this also defines a secondary role for this group, which is (and i use this word with hesitation) Entertainment. Our peers must enjoy what they are hearing. Perhaps a better word is “Relevant” (another overused word in ministry).
Audience 3 –> Peers who have not yet decided to commit to Christ. This may be visitors or those who have been in church for a while, but who are not Christ Followers. Again, our role is two fold. We are to be relevant and entertaining, but more importantly we must show ourselves authentic in our faith and worship. We must show them that its okay to be honest with our spirituality.
So really, it boils down to 3 Audiences (God, Christ Followers, non Followers) and 3 Roles (Authentic Worshippers, Lead Worshippers, and Relevant Worshippers).
I’m not sure I got all that across in my short little “devo” but that was the plan.
I DID video a Worship confessional, which will be posted before the end of the day today.
