X:Worship (5.0)
Well, it seems like every other week I don’t get this thing on film. I certainly had time Sunday afternoon and during the off day Monday, but family *cough*spring cleaning*cough* took precedence. Short version today:
Last minute call from drummer again. Acoustic set again. Alone vocally again. Went pretty decent with one issue. I’m not fully sure what happened, but somewhere between run-through Sunday at 8 and service at 11, Josh (other acoustic player) and I ended up on different pages during the 2nd song. Everything else flowed well. Set and notes:
Meet With Me - Key: A
Pretty basic. Josh plays a nice acoustic rhythm and feel that works great with the original speed, but we needed it sped up… which we did. Everything went nicely.
Deliver Me - D#m
This is the problem song. Went very well during the run-through after we got on the same page. Not totally sure what the problem was in service… our guitars just didn’t seem to mesh, which in turn kinda made it seem like the voice wasn’t meshing either. But i linked this directly up with…
Jesus, Lover of My Soul - D#m
This is a very simple and versatile song that I’ve played in just about every key imaginable over the past decade or so that it’s been out. The main line in Deliver Me is D#m, C#, B, F# –or F#m, but we kept it straight F#–. You can role right through Jesus, Lover of My Soul with that exact progression. Sure it’s not exact to the original progression, but it works very well. So, the transition was seamless. And… Sweetly enough, we hooked right into…
How Great Is Our God - Db (i.e. - C# wink wink)
So, we run through D#m, C#, B, F# and instead of resolving the song to the D# or letting it fade, we go straight into the very recognizable acoustic riff of How Great is Our God. Everything went well on this song, nothing much to talk about.
The main set (there was a break between Meet With Me and the others) did not quite go as I had envisioned, but the vision included a full band to allow for a lot of build and dynamics between Deliver Me and Jesus Lover of My Soul. It went well enough to keep those two tied together and we’ll try again in a few weeks with the full band.
I am struggling vocally lately more than I ever have, and I think it’s due to over use of my voice. It’s a lame excuse, but it’s true none the less… I get up at 7 AM, sing nonstop from 8-9:30 (practice), go to main service and sing for another 30 minutes during the service worship set, then up to lead at 11. This shouldn’t be a problem for me, but Sunday I had a very very dry mouth and throat while pushing through the set. I just need to stay hydrated and maybe take a bit of a break during service.
Oh, and for the 4th time in 7 weeks leading, we did at least one song that the main service did as well (How Great is Our God).
Thanks for listening.
