Notebook
July 2nd, 2007 by Jaybrams

Well, I have an announcement first. For the most part, I am taking a break from video confessionals (I can count… X:Worship 9 is my last video one and about 30 minutes away from completion. I just haven’t had a chance to finish it). The main reason is time… when I decided to start adding clips from the service it turned a 30 minute job into a multi-hour job —watching the service, editing out what I didn’t like, fighting over what sounded “decent” and what didn’t, etc—and its not fair to my family to take another night away from them. Since this whole worship thing is volunteer right now anyway, I’m going to stick to text-fessionals. I’ll still video the services for my own benefit, so maybe every now and then I’ll throw something up.

That said, on to this week.

Text-Fessional for July 1, 2007.

Most of the band were away at Kids Camp, singing and playing with the Kids this week, so we weren’t going to have anyone available for worship practice thursday. I decided to go acoustic and solo again this week.

We also have a group leaving this saturday for Acuna Mexico to do some mission work, so I had a special pre-service song prepared. Alas, they were not there; they were being “prayed off” in our church’s main service, which is good. So I played it for everyone else, we had some fun with it, good times all around (I’m going to record it and post the video of it tonight or tomorrow for the guys to see, so you’ll know what it is then).

On to the service set.

Filled With Your Glory (Starfield) - Ab- I thought the group knew this one. They didn’t. Not a big deal to teach a new song, except that the next song is new as well. More on this song in a minute.
Never Let Go (Redman) - B- This one I knew was brand new. I thought going acoustic / solo would be a good way to introduce it. There is a lot of room for dynamics and movement in this song with a full band, and now that most of the members have heard it, it should be easier to pick up. I think I rushed it a little bit, but I made it through, and there was a lot of involvement (clapping, singing, etc). Good song.
How Great Is Our God (Tomlin) - Db- Everyone knows the drill with this one. By this time, though, the fever I had been fighting off saturday night and sunday morning was back in full swing. I was exhausted after basically just three songs… and drenched in sweat. I pushed through though, actually extended the song a little bit and just worshipped despite knowing I probably was starting to look like a ghost.

Text-Fessional Appendix:
So, there are a few songs that I just can’t sing anymore without laughing on the inside. One is “How Could I But Love You” … which I cannot comment on further. (Actually I don’t think I’ve ever sang this song in any worship service, but I sing it in my head and laugh alot. There is something wrong about that.)

Another is “Lord I Lift Your Name On High.” Where others say “You came from heaven to earth, my debt to pay,” I… for some odd reason, sing “you came from heaven to earth, my dead toupee” which doesn’t make sense, but sing it as loud as you want and no one will know the difference.

And now, “Filled With Your Glory.” Part of the chorus is “The whole earth / is filled with your glory Lord / Angels and men adore / creation longs for what’s in store” … sounds nice, makes sense. But saturday morning, going through the song list in my head, envisioning and all that jazz —this is now what I sing–  ”The whole earth / is filled with your glory Lord / Angels and minotaurs / creation longs for what’s in store” … witch actually makes sense, except that minotaurs aren’t real. But if they were it would make sense.

So, enjoy those little nuggets next time you hear the respective songs.
