Text-Fessional for July 15, 2007

Josh (guitar player) was unavailable again this week, but with good reason; he was helping at his mom’s church. I’m all for helping other churches out. So I had a decision to make on Thursday… band with acoustic front and no electric? or electric front and no acoustic? … I chose acoustic… and that led to another choice which you can read about in the previous post…

So, I get to church and open up my Bro-In-Law’s guitar case to discover the Washburn he is kind enough to let me borrow came with no strings attached. He had just returned from Mexico and the were so nasty he wanted to just take them off for me. Unfortunately he didn’t give the guitar to me, my mom did… and so it was never told to me.

Luckily I had one mostly complete set at church, but it was missing the ever-important G String. You gotta love the G-String… It’s by far the most important string on the guitar. If you don’t believe me, take it off and try to play through a worship song…. without it, minors sound like major 2nds and majors sound like… well, seconds also… see what i mean?

So, I called my bro-in-law who lives with my mom… my mom goes to my church, bro-in-law doesn’t… asked for a spare g-string, which in and of it self sounds fairly racy. She shows up at church with a B-String, which isn’t quite as sexy as a g-string, but in an emergency such as this it WILL do the job. And it did.

So, here’s the set:

So Long Self (Mercy Me) - G (key) - This was our Pre-service “everyone get in here” song. I took this down a half step from the original — Ab for those of you scoring at home… and if you’re scoring at home, why are you reading this blog at the same time??? that makes me nervous — I thoroughly enjoyed it. During the very whiny part of the original (bridge towards the end) we actually pulled it back into a jazz type swing. A whiny jazz swing.  Its not quite the same without an Electric, but it worked.

No One Like You (Crowder) - G - Pretty basic. Haven’t done this since the last church I was at. It was a staple there, but, i dunno, maybe just too old now. I still enjoyed it and had good times.

Better Is One Day (Redman) - B - Usually I up the tempo a little and pretend to be Kutlass. This time i skipped on pretending to be Kutlass, but kept it at a medium tempo. Bridge didn’t go so well (My Heart and flesh cry out…) so I might invite the band to make it different / more our own next time.

He Knows My Name / How Deep The Father’s Love Medley (people) - E - I love doing this medley. If you don’t medley these songs… do it. Seriously… First and Last verse of How Deep is all you need to throw in there.  And if you just go (from He knows) vs 1, ch, vs 2, how deep arrangement, ch (from He knows) then its not very long, but it’s perfect. Do it…

Surrender (Some other dude) - G - One of my favorite all time worship songs despite not liking the way I sing the chorus… maybe if i up the Key… the chorus is a weird middle range that just kinda sounds blah. And i can’t jump the octave like Lincoln does cause then it’s too high for me, so maybe i’ll bump it to A and try that next time. Other than that, love it love it.

Faith and Ally did  a good job on the vocalsTravis on bass and James on drums as usual.

Confess yo’self.
