Christmas Songs

I am not a grinch… i’m just not a fan of most Christmas songs. 1) they’re dumb. 2) seriously, they’re really dumb… little drummer boy? what the hell is that?

If they were so great, wouldn’t we hear them year round? Great music is great music, it doesn’t matter when you hear it. Case in point, I could listen to the Trans-Siberian Orchastra’s Christmas stuff any day of the year and my ears would be pleased… But try playing “Happy Birthday Jesus” in June and see how well that goes over.

Of course there are exceptions beyond just the Trans-Siberian stuff, but for the most part it’s mostly the instrumentals that I enjoy. Probably because most traditional Christmas songs are pretty sound musically, i just have a problem with the lyrics. Remove the lyrics, spruce up the music, and i’ll be rockin’ right along with you at Christmas… but if I have to hear someone asking Mary if she knew that her baby boy would grow up to be her saviour, i do whatever I can to keep from slapping whoever is singing along… of course mary knew! she had a baby before any boinkage occured and angels appeared to her husband explaining the whole ordeal… how could she not know?

So, why have I always had this strange desire to 1) record a personal Christmas album. and 2) put on a big Christmas concert…. i guess because then I could pick and choose which songs were featured. but, alas, i’m lazy and not nearly talented enough to do it on my own…

anyone want to join me and put something together for next year?

I LOVE Christmas music!! I have over 30 different albums, with plans on buying more.

And I would listen to it all year long if people wouldn’t shoot me over it.

    :)

Vince Guaraldi – “A Charlie Brown Christmas” … best Christmas music hands down. No more comments are needed on this blog because I just closed the discussion. Next item please! :)

it’s good to know i’m not the only one who could listen to Christmas music all year long. ok, so maybe not “jingle bells” or “here comes santa claus”, but songs like “Christmas shoes” and…there’s a new one out but i can’t remember the name or artist…are beautiful. got a problem with Christmas music in the summer? how bout eric champion’s “hot Christmas”? most Christmas music is all about Christ, so since i listen to a Christian music station i do get Christmas music all year long. :)

I’m all down for a CD project! I’m not the biggest fan of Christmas music either. I like old school Brenda Lee/Mel Torme stuff or now my 2 favorites are MercyMe’s Christmas Sessions and Relient K’s Let it snow…let it reindeer.

    “I am not a grinch…”

usually seems that when a disclaimer is necessary, there is more commonality than we prefer to admit :) sounds a little grinchish…

Oh dude it’d be awful good fun :) And I mean “awful” and “good” and probably more hilarious than fun! HAHAHA. But I’d love the chance to do it!

  9. Jaybrams says:

so it looks like we have 4 guitarists who all can sing at some level, plus a torme impersonator… this would be the best christmas album ever.

Too bad we’re all 100s of miles away from each other.
