One-2 Book Plan
I’m implementing a plan to read one non school related book every two weeks… thus, the One-2 Book Plan. I can only add books to which I have direct access and the freedom to mark up (which, if you’re a friend and you loan a book to me, expect it to come back with notes… likewise, if i loan you a book, and it doesn’t come back with blue, black or red ink all over the place, i’m going to think you didn’t read it and will be greatly offended). I am effectively set through the end of the year… technically only through Dec. 21st, but I’ll leave the week of Christmas empty for other things.
I’m looking to keep it diverse in both style and subject. Here’s what I’ve got so far, and yes, at least for now, i’m on pace! WOOT!
unChristian - David Kinnaman: (start date) 9/27/2008
In A Pit With A Lion on Snowy Day - Mark Batterson: 10/12/2008
Divine Nobodies - Jim Palmer: 10/26/2008 (I started this in the spring… going to start it over and finish it this time around).
Why We’re Not Emmergant (By two guys who should be) - Kevin Deyoung: 11/9/2008
Irresistable Revolution - Shane Claiborne: 11/23/2008 (thanks blake)
The Abolition of Man - CS Lewis: 12/7/2008 (my cover looks completely different than this one though)
Okay, so i’m a little late on a couple of these. I’ve already got my eye on several for 2009 but welcome your advise/suggestions/thoughts/criticisms/freebooks/etc. I hope to throw quick reviews up as I finish them, or as I am inspired.

looks like these are all “Christian” books…any room for classic literature or no?
i hope you’re kidding… this is what i’ve read in the past three weeks:
Oedipus the King, The Illiad, The Odyssey, and Augustine’s Confessions (which was great)…
Coming in the next three weeks: Apology of Socrates, Phaedo, Dante’s Inferno, Tartuffe, Don Quixote, Metamorphasis (kafka version), and The Death of Ivan Ilyich
But this particular “plan” is focused specifically on personal growth. I dig good fiction, so yes, if you have suggestions on that front, bring them on.
Do you watch HEROES? Mohinder is especially Kafka Gregor-esque this season. All of the “classics” you’ve listed are great - don’t hate that you’ve been “forced” to read them, they’ll stick with you forever.
forgot you have lit. class…cool. though I cannot read any more right now, of late i have been intrigued by the diaries of some marquee believers…like jonathan edwards, william carey, john wesley, etc. i am very interested in their ideas of personal spiritual disciplines versus how we handle this today.
Green Eggs and Ham provides an interesting perspective on gluttony.
Sorry, no constructive thought comng through at this point.
dang, i think amy just called out my fatness
… i should definitely pick up green eggs and ham if it will help with my gluttony.
No, i don’t watch heroes.
Jon, think thanksgiving break and christmas break. Those are your opportunities to read something you want rather than something you must. And by the time Christmas comes around, you can go ahead and read whatever you want in Greek as well, just to show off.
I would completely recommend “The Shack” by William P. Young…it is a “reality fiction” book and it is amazing. It definlty helped me to understand and enjoy my relationship with God in a new way. I finished it in about a week (pretty impressive with two young kiddos!) and plan on re-reading it to see if I can catch anything new…LOVED it!
[...] was all on pace to finish unChristian within the timeframe of my goal, but for some reason got stuck on the last forty pages. Perhaps because, as i mentioned, the text [...]
