Conversations with a caustic four year old

Heard recently around the dinner table…

Four Year Old (4YO): What did you have for lunch today daddy?

Me: Lucky’s where I get it for free!

4YO: Why you get it free?

Me: Because i’m so AWESOME!

4YO: (giggles) but daddy… You’re FAT!

… (silence with exception of her maniacal laughter) …

Me: (dejected) So… you can’t be fat and awesome?

4YO: (with conviction) NO!

… (more laughter) …

Hey…I have to admit… I saw the pictures of you and Mark. I didn’t expect to see what I saw…You both were so skinny!! But hey…I’m ahead of all of you on time. I am a true believer some weight gain is ‘comfort’ …we have settled in to our lives that we will now lead. But we also need to keep it within reason because we want to live a life to see our children weddings, births and have the fun of being grand parents. You also want to be able to throw the ball, go for walks, go to movies without some type of help other than our own body…right? The other reason,,,,is our spouses…we want to be able after we have raised our family to be able to spend some time together ….which means maybe reliving a dream of going somewhere or doing some thing that you can do because you took care of your body. I’m not talking about becoming a ‘health nut’ but look at some options available in your lives now. Go for walks after dinner with the family, plan weekend free stuff which means a lot of walking, have a fun evening challenging each other on situps, etc…Hey…the ideas should be endless.

P.S. I my case…I love to swing on swing sets. I asked John to walk with me because I was concerned about the people at the park (it really wasn’t that bad, but I was still concerned). Well, it now has him walking to the park with me. I get to swing for a few minutes and then we walk around the lake and come home. This is so good for him he is 10 years older than me and I just can’t imagine my life without him. I almost loss him last year which opened my eyes to the precious importance of telling your spouse each day that you love them.
