So I’m really tired lately… like exhausted. Monday night I dozed off at 6:30 waiting for my youngest to get ready for bed. No big deal… Last night, while working on my final for HTStB, my eyes were so heavy and my head was spinning from exhaustion so much that it seemed as if I was going to pass out. I *needed* to write most of my seven-page paper… all I made it through was a hand written outline. At approximately 7:23 PM, i sat my notebook down on the coffee table and zonked out on the couch.Other than the dog licking me in the face, i slept through pretty much everything the rest of the night… The wife and oldest squid playing the very loud Mall Madness didn’t even phase me… I vaguely remember waking up once to turn over while Dionna played Oblivion, and remember crawling into bed at around 11 ish…
Nothing else is bothering me. No headaches, no achy muscles, no flu symptoms… but here I am after sleeping for 10 hours last night and the tiredness is starting to set in again… i’ve got a final due tomorrow that still hasn’t stressed me too much… most of it has already been written through various other assignments throughout the class, but it’s still 6-7 pages that I have to write / edit / compile tonight in order to prepare for the oral presentation tomorrow night… so if i make it through tonight and tomorrow, i’ll give this exhaustion thing through the weekend… if my body doesn’t pick itself back up, perhaps i’ll visit the doctor…
in other news, there was no text-fessional this week because we turned sunday into a game night. We also announced the hiring of a new youth pastor… like a full time one… finally… and it’s not me… thankfully… so that is good because the group really needs vision and direction, something I believe this guy will bring.
In other news, our high school ministry’s bass player’s mom took a new job at a different church. It was good worshipping with him, but those days are now over. I am trying to convince dionna to pick it back up and play with us. I think it’s working. Did you know she played? I taught her on a monday and on tuesday she was playing with the worship team. As the weeks went on, i was able to teach her how to do some cool stuff… so now, since *her* bass is busted, i just need to find someone to borrow a bass from (we’d love to buy her a new one, but just can’t right now…).
In other news, my daughters are still freakin’ awesome.
English Comp II is officially over as my final paper’s grade was just posted. The class was highlighted by two papers really. The final paper was about contemporary poets using technology to bring more exposure to the art. I’m not even that serious of a poet anymore, but it was still a fun paper to write… cause i’m a dork i guess.
The other paper that I enjoyed much more than I expected was our analysis of the Greek drama “Oedipus the King.” I am not a fan of reading plays, especially ancient ones. Seriously, why must we read the ancient’s in old english… it was written in Greek in the first place, can’t we just translate it to modern english instead of using the old english translations?? Anyway, I digress… so the discussion came up about Greek culture and if the early church had a tough task ahead of them when evangelizing such a polytheistic people. The overwhelming response was ”yes” but I disagreed… mostly because I like disagreeing.
So birthed from that I used “Oedipus the King” to show that the Greeks were actually ripe for conversion, or at the very least had a foundation of spirituality that Paul could pull from while learning to be all things to all people in order to share Christ. Granted the Oedipus series was written 400 years before Paul, but history and the account of the Greeks in Acts shows that not too much had changed as far as their religious views were concerned. Fast forward 2000 some odd years later and Greece is around 98% Christian… perhaps Paul laid a nice foundation…
perhaps one day I’ll post the essay. It was limited to 1200 words so I actually only got through about 1/3 of the play before wrapping it up hastily…
Tonight is How To Study the Bible. 3 Thursday nights left in this one (Dec. 13th). By far this has been my favorite class this semester. It helps that it’s biblical in nature and not just a core/generic class, but beyond this reason I’m thoroughly enjoying it because it is changing how I read and study the word more than I thought it would. I was familiar with most of the concepts and methods before the class started, but I had difficulty putting it into practice. This particular text book is greatness if you want to refresh, rethink, or re-envision the method you use for studying God’s word.
p.s. - winter break will bring new songs (which will just bore you and prove further that my wife is my biggest fan only because she loves me).
p.p.s - Rick was so kind to get me Divine Nobodies. He answered the call to action. And he is so pimpin’. None of you other people are… jerks.
Everytime I ask you for help, I am asking you for money. So far, i have sadly been let down. … However, that is to be expected because basically I was asking you to support my sports habits.
This time, though I will not ask you for money. I have winter break coming very soon. This is my last week of Comp II, and I have less than a month left in the very Sunday School named-but great content class “How To Study The Bible.” I want to use the month I have off to read something other than school related stuff, but I cannot bring myself to purchase non-school related books… so, please be so kind to Christmas gift me with any off of my amazon wish list (click to the right of this post). Here are some highlights:
Jim Palmer’s stuff is piquing my interests. I dont like that he’s compared to Donald Miller, cause i can’t get into miller. But I like the excerpts on his site. He’s also said to be “emergent” which has all sorts of connotations that may or may not turn you off… but i try not to get into labels. I just want good, thought out thoughts on Christ. All I know is i like what he has to say on his blog and want to read more from either of his books.
Dave Burchett has a great blog and two books that are on a subject that I’ve been thoughtful of lately: the wounded church. Infact, both Dave’s and Jim’s books deal with this to a degree. And he’s in my area so maybe one day i can run into him and say ‘hey i read your book’ and then he can say ‘oh you’re one of the two!’ we can exchange chortles and hug or something.
Mark Batterson is a pastor and this book has received rave reviews on amazon and from my personal friends. And yah, i read his blog too… I’ve had my eye on this one for a long time, but just haven’t bought any books in forever. Maybe it will motivate me to get off my butt and do something for Christ.
Those are at the top of my list now, more out of curiosity than anything. Perhaps Dungy’s, Driscoll’s, or Stanley’s stuff is more practical, but i’ll take any of it…
Don’t let me down. The address at amazon.com is correct. One day i’ll be in position to hook you up, and I certainly will… just ask blake.
Deliver Me - Crowder - C#m Give Us Clean Hands - Hall - G
Short set, both extended vamps. Various reasons.
and now… some such:
We watched Karate Kid on DVD with the eldest (turns 8 in 11 days)… that was before the PG-13 ratings… and dang, that movie cusses a lot for a PG family movie. But its cool, cause it was one of my favorite movies growing up and i turned out okay, damn it (I still practice the Crane Kick whenever I can).
We got said DVD from library since we cancelled our blockbuster online account… Dude, they have a bunch of freakin movies at the library, unfortunately the newest are about 2 years old, but there are plenty that we haven’t seen or want to see again… all fo’ free…
I wish they’d rename my current class “How To Study The Bible” to something that sounds like i’m going to college rather than a private Christian high school… but dang, i’m enjoying the class work so far…
Now, i know most of you didn’t care about most of that, but I’ve been in a bit of a blog/posting funk so i wanted to get that stuff off my chest…
In doing research for my Comp II thesis I came across who has become one of my new favorite poets, Taylor Mali. This particular poem has made its rounds in spam mail, altered and such (he has the story about it on his site), but here is the original poem, by the original artist… (PG-13 rating for “ass-kicking” and giving the finger along with one “G-D”…. but, seriously, in context… its justified)
For the record, he’s easier to look at with short hair… not that I really care what guys look like… you know, i’m not going to dig this hole any deeper.

There exists an odd phenomenon between American Football (hereafter referred to as “football”) fans and World Football (henceforth “soccer”) fans: Both feel their style of football is more the “real” sport, and both fail to realize that the sports share common roots. The inventor of American football, Walter Camp, was strongly influenced by William Ebb Ellis who commonly is credited with creating Rugby, a sport birthed directly from soccer (Bellis). Which fans, then, have a stronger argument for their beloved sport? (more…)
For the record, two of my classes are complete. I will not reveal my grades but my GPA rhymes with “floor-point-oh.” But I haven’t had any “Bible” based classes yet, so we will see how this goes.
VERY IMPORTANT: If any of you care about me (and I hope you do) you need to listen carefully. I cannot pass any of my classes without books! What a novel thing! So, hook a brother up and click the button below. If I don’t have an pending school books, don’t let that rob you of your blessing! Simply buy something off one of my other lists or give me a gift card… see that’s how it works. Trust me.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. There is no shame in my game.
P.S. - I’m not sure I believe half of the stuff in my next essay (to be posted today), but it landed me a nice grade. I think I believe it in theory but not in practice.
After turning in the final essay last night, English Comp I officially came to an end. I was a little confused on the final project, but i’m confident everything will work out alright.
This morning English Comp II officially started. Um… crap… there is a plethora of reading assignments and looks much more time intensive than Comp I was…
Less than a month away and I’ll have Thursday night on-campus classes again as well. So, I better buckle down and get focused.

“I liked the fact that I wasn’t born in the States… that I was different. It was almost as if I was a bit of a celebrity when we came back home. Everyone wanted to talk to the white kid from Africa.” Growing up as an MK – Missionary Kid – in Nigeria has given Jonathan Seabourn a unique perspective on American culture, especially as it relates to the sub-culture of Christianity and the Church. Even as a married 26-year-old he is still learning to adapt to the American way of church life. …

There is a T-shirt hanging in my closet that has never been worn and was bought only for the content it boldly proclaims: “Those who think they know everything annoy those of us that do.” I had heard my father utter these words for years on end, generally during one of our heated sports debates. We had a bit of an unspoken rule related to sports growing up that still rings true today: If you don’t know what you are talking about, leave your mouth shut at the door and learn. It really is not as crass as it sounds; it was our way of prodding, jabbing and laughing with – and sometimes at – each other. Unfortunately, the sports bond common among many father-son relationships rarely carried over into other areas of discussion.
This is not to say the relationship lacked love; by all means, my father did all he could to provide and display affection for his children. (more…)
